Finding the Best Psychologist in Singapore

Authored By Amrit Kaur

Its nice to see that so many people now understand the power of therapy and are willing to seek help. But the journey to finding the perfect psychologist remains daunting.

Will this professional truly understand me? Will they ensure I feel acknowledged? Are they capable of providing the assistance I need?

Psychologists have explored the many elements that determine the effectiveness of therapy. Factors to consider include the therapist's gender, credentials, preferred treatment modality (e.g. CBT versus Psychodynamic therapy vs ACT) and age. Yet, as research consistently highlights, none of these matter more than compatibility.

The American Psychological Association describes this as the “therapeutic alliance”—the trust and rapport established between therapist and client. This connection is the strongest indicator of whether therapy will be successful. When the therapeutic alliance is weak, patients lose motivation, and drop out very quickly.

So, how do you not only locate the best psychologist in Singapore but also the one who is the right match for you?

Begin by arranging an initial meeting. Notice your feelings when you're with them. Are they attentive? Do they show empathy? Do you feel understood?

If anything seems amiss, don't hesitate to seek another option. The first therapist you encounter doesn't have to be your final choice.

Naturally, this method of trial and error can be expensive, particularly if you're paying from your own pocket. However, it ultimately saves both time and money as your initial impressions of a therapist predicts how effective the therapy will be.

But even before we get to the stage of judging the therapeutic relationship, it's crucial to make a sensible shortlist of potential therapist.

To do this, first recognize that therapy is both an art and a science. Holding a Master’s or PhD in Psychology indicates that the therapist has dedicated years to studying the science of mental health treatment - what works, what doesn’t, what dangers to avoid.

Be careful when choosing someone who has only completed a few certificate courses, a diploma, or a basic degree. Also, be cautious of those who are fresh out of university. Shortlist qualified people, and then determine who feels best to sit with in sessions.

Accessibility is another key factor in determining who makes your shortlist. With busy lives, therapy is effective only if you can consistently attend sessions. It's essential to find a psychologist who is conveniently located or offers online sessions.

Lastly, don't overlook the value of recommendations. A glowing review from a friend or a positive online testimonial can guide you to the right therapist.

Ultimately, selecting a therapist is a significant initial step toward serenity. Trust your instincts, rely on research, and embark on your healing journey.
